Yallingup Galleries in WA has been showing Maki’s work since mid 2016 when we were introduced to the gallery owners, Rob and Robyn Malcolm, by our artist friend Simon McLean from the Gold Coast. Maki quickly developed a strong following in WA and we’ve been sending her paintings there regularly, most recently in December, 2017.

You can see the paintings they have by visiting their gallery website or by having a look at the “paintings” of this website.

Kazuyo’s Collection is a funky little gallery/shop at 195 B Boundary St, West End QLD. Kazuyo makes clothes and handbags from vintage kimono cloth and her shop displays a number of other local artists showing prints, ceramics and wooden pieces, mostly with a Japanese feeling. Maki constantly has her ceramics on display there, but during this two month “show”, a large selection of her ceramics, small paintings and prints were on display. A customer favourite was a 2018 calendar with prints of Maki’s paintings and Hillel’s haiku.

Maki had been showing her work in Australia’s capital city of Canberra since 2009 when she was introduced to Paintbox Gallery owners, Steve and Anne Watson, by Janene Gardner and Mary Marks, the owners of Marks and Gardner Gallery on Tamborine Mountain.

Maki had successful yearly exhibitions at Paintbox from 2009 thru 2013. Steve and Anne closed their main gallery in 2014 but have occasional popup shows and decided to take part in the New York Art Fair in August, 2017, showing the paintings of four Australian artists, Maki among them.

Maki had four works in the show and they sold quickly. Prints of the paintings – signed and numbered editions on canvas or simple prints on handmade paper – are available by contacting us.

Maki’s exhibition at the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah, Queensland was a wonderful event. The Tweed Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre is one of the finest galleries in Australia and we were honoured to have Maki’s work there. They were also honoured to be showing Maki’s paintings in the front gallery and the reception of the staff and gallery visitors was very warm.

We also held a public program called, “Responding to the Evocative Art of Maki Horanai: a playshop in creative looking and writing” in which members of the community were welcomed to join and respond to Maki’s work by writing haiku or some other form of poetry.

In spite of a rather violent storm in the area, about 15 people joined and had an opportunity to share their reactions to Maki’s paintings.

Mountain Dreams has possible the most unusual Christmas Tree on Tamborine Mountain. Created by the gallery’s co-owner Hillel, this tree has been born from the influrescence which drops from the Piccabean Palm Tree, also known as the Bangalow Palm which can be seen in the rainforests of Australia, particularly in Queensland. Trimmed and covered (many times!) in protective shellac, this Christmas tree aims to display the Real Spirit of the Season: a love and respect for nature and all of nature’s creations.
